Mantica Scions Mantica Chronicles Book One eBook T J Lane Reviews
3.5 A bold debut. Lane's first book in a saga uses familiar sci-fi and fantasy settings, but in an unexpected blend. Tech-fantasy or cyber-punk, blended with heroic lo-tech fantasy. There's plenty of gripping Hollywood-style action. Lane's description of setting is atmospheric and memorable, and her wordcraft is quite enjoyable to read.
I think it serves readers to know that you will become acquainted with two fantasy worlds fairly quickly in the book, both mostly seen through the eyes of the hero/central character. It's not a real spoiler to say so, it may help you to settle into the book knowing that a sudden early shift in setting is coming and we stay with that setting for the main part of Book 1.
The characters are likable, especially the simple and honourable band of heroes who support the main cast, but I sensed that a few of the leads were let down a little by hammy or hollow dialogue. Also I think at times Mantica struggles to identify a target readership Sometimes the simplicity would suggest this was written for younger readers, but sometimes the action is a little too gory for YA fiction.
I think T.J. Lane is experimenting here with a potful of good ingredients and searching for her voice as a fiction author. She crafts some admirable work, which at its finest puts me in mind of other contemporary fantasy writers such as China Mieville for lyricism, and Matthew Riley for blockbuster action. I'm keeping an eye out for book 2 in the Mantica Chronicles!
