They chose some first-class décor for their work space and it quickly turned into a museum of masterpieces open to the public. This book reproduces the paintings and takes you room by room through the collection. Each painting is explained in detail. This book helped in getting oriented to the Uffizi. However, it seems that there are periodic movements of the collection so it didn't work consistently as a step-by-step guide. I like the overall approach of setting priorities and knowing why specific items in the gallery are on the "not to be missed" list. We had limited time at the Uffizi and this helped us set our priorities.
A "must have" book for everyone planning a visit to the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Full of solid information and easy to read.
Generally helpful but got lost about halfway through the Uffizi as certain galleries were closed or works relocated (temporarily or permanently). Not the author's fault, certainly, but for those looking to use it on a current tour, the walk through approach to the book may be less valuable than you would like. When the content matched the current physical locations, it was interesting and helpful.
We went in 2017 and the interesting info in this guide book was eclipsed by the fact that pieces in the museum have moved around.
Sam Hilt's, "The Uffizi Gallery" is a wonderful guide through his thoughts on what he considers to be the the top 30 paintings in this Florence treasure of a gallery. My wife and I had the pleasure of being with him a couple of years ago when he led a small group through the Uffizi and we could hear his voice coming through his descriptive writing. Sam's comparisons and contrasts of Leonardo's and Botticelli's 'Annunciation' clearly displays his artistic and intellectual approach to art. Would like to put a bee in Sam's bonnet to write about the Louvre and The Met.
I read this book before visiting the Uffizi and then took it along to use as our guide. Practically speaking this approach simplified an otherwise overwhelming first visit to this amazing museum. The author is especially strong on the early and middle Renaissance periods, and he helps one see the beauty of the earliest paintings, which can look inaccessible to modern eyes. And no need to squint to read tiny guidebook text. Definitely worth bringing along on a trip to Florence.
This book is a must for anyone who may be visiting the Uffizi in Florence. The information provides a comprehensive understanding of the underlying meaning and significance in each of the 30 paintings included in this book. It helps to make the visual experience one filled with an understanding of the subtle nuances each painting reveals to the onlooker. I appreciate the scholarship invovled which is presented in such an accessible manner. I highly recommend this book to read prior to visiting and as a reference while viewing these exquisite paintings.
